This 18 kilometre trail around Lysa Hora takes you through some steep but not difficult or dangerous terrain, leading to wonderful panoramic views as far as the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia. The start point is accessible by car or local trains.
Lysa Hora is the highest peak in the Beskydy Mountains and the third highest peak in the Czech Republic. At 1324 metres above sea level, it is just high enough that the trees are short and widely spaced near the top, hence the name ‘Bald Mountain’.
There are several modern restaurants and accommodation options available on the summit offering excellent traditional cuisine. In the valley below there are bigger and more luxurious hotels. There is also one of the region’s best brewpubs if you’d like to try the latest generation of the Czech Republic’s world-class beer.
Lysa Hora is a very popular destination at all times of the year and in the spring and summer it can get very crowded on the summit from late morning onwards. We recommend this particular route because it contains a variety of the terrain and views available. There are shorter routes often used by families with children and there is even a bus service to the top now and again, which is perfect for anyone physically unable to walk up. Many local people complain that it’s ‘as busy as Wenceslas Square’ and prefer to avoid it in favour of the many other excellent trails in the vicinity. However, if you’re a visitor, it would be a pity to miss out on the highest peak – just make an early start, get to the top by about 1030 and by the time the crowds build up, you’ll be ready to leave.
