Radhošť
Radhošť mountain lies at the heart of the Wallachian Beskydy legend of Radegast, the pagan god of hospitality, harvest and fertility. According to the legend, he left his idol on top of the mountain to destroy the Christian missionaries Cyril and Methodius who came to Greater Moravia in the 860s. In a true Moravian spirit of hospitality he seems to have come to some kind of an agreement with them and they now share the mountain. Radegast’s modern idol stands on the path to Pustevný, while the beautiful wooden church of Cyril and Methodius has been attracting visitors and pilgrims alike since 1896.
Whichever way you choose to go up the mountain, the trip is a steep one. There are routes for hikers, cyclists, skiers and drivers and each of them rewards you with fantastic views across the Moravian Gate to the North and Slovakia to the South and East. Starting from Rožnov pod Radhoštem, there is a trail suitable for hikers and off-road cyclists which leads to a wonderful trip along the ridges past Pustevný (see separate post) where you can have a taste of local food and drink before you continue on your way.
The whole area is crossed by cycle and hiking paths which means you can plan long or short trips, depending on your level of fitness and mode of transport. They are shown on hiking maps as colour coded lines and on the ground by coloured strips painted on trees and rocks, so you don’t have to be an expert navigator to get the best out of the countryside.
