Lysa hora (Bald Mountain) at 1324m above sea level, is the highest mountain in the Moravian-Silesian Beskydys and the Outer Western Carpathians in Moravia. This is a unique tourist destination, the intersection of hiking trails and an excellent place to view distant horizons in clear weather. A great way to see the Mala Fatra mountains and the High and Low Tatra mountains in Slovakia, and in the northwest, the Jeseníky mountains on the border with Poland.
Our Lass topping up with fresh spring water.
Well-maintained paths.
Views of other picturesque ridge-walks.
Our Lass and Our Dog having a breather.
Higher up, the paths are a little less like roads.
‘Do you know how long it takes this rubbish to decompose? Are you curious?’
Let’s ask Miss Beskydy, November 3rd, 2012… Paper; 2 years…
Cigarettes; 5 years…
Tin cans; 50 years…
But plastic bottles; a whopping, shocking 100 years! ‘Take your rubbish home with you!’
Our Dog in her permanent state of expectation… sooner or later, food will appear from a pocket, if only she stares at it for long enough.
Mysterious piles of stones. Legend has it that there used to be a reason for this BUT NOBODY KNOWS WHAT IT WAS!
A mountain cottage in the local style, about as far up as it’s possible to get by 4×4 in the winter.
Wide open spaces all around.
The top of the mountain, shrouded in mystery and a small cloud.
Excellent ridge-walking or cycling country!
The path getting rockier and steeper.
I can’t find any information about this, except that he probably didn’t walk away from the landing.
The summit. If you look carefully, you can see a glider in a thermal up there somewhere.
Our Dog, sensing the proximity of food, waiting impatiently for us to provide it.
Lunatic cyclists. This just proves how much of the Beskydy range can be cycled.
Our Lass and Our Dog at the summit.
Our Man, Our Kid and Our Dog, two of whom seem less than impressed by their victory over the mountain.
From the top, there are many paths down… most of which go past some excellent hotels, restaurants and pubs.
Our Kid, Our Man, Our Lass and Our Dog. Photographic evidence that we made it!
New build… a lovely new place to eat, drink and prepare for the descent.
Theoretically, you can see my house from up here!
Have you got planning permission for this mountain, sir?
Welcome respite from the wind and weather. Great food and drink as well as a warm fire and a warmer welcome.
Our Lass and Our Kid enjoying some nourishing soup at the top of a mountain. This is truly civilised.
A nice warm fire and somewhere to dry wet kit while you relax. You don’t get this in the Brecon Beacons!
Racing the cloud-base down to the valley.
Freezing wind. You can’t see it in this picture but you can see what it’s done to the trees.
Dusk approaching.
A nice sweeping view of a weather front.
Sheltered villages beckoning us down to the warmth.
The deepening gloom…
It’s all starting to get Tolkeinian as the night draws in.
Trees killed by the winter weather.
An inviting ridge walk but not today.
Still much too far up the mountain for my liking in the evening.
And finally, a beautiful sunset…
…which would be much more beautiful if not seen from halfway down a mountain in a freezing wind with Our Kid in a child carrier on my back!
An inviting cottage, but not for us, not tonight.
The last of the daylight…
…the first of the dark.
Looking back at the summit in its own private cloud.
Much more beautiful in the daylight!
